Benefits for healthy full-term babies
Kangaroo Mother Care
Generally, a full term baby regulates the temperature properly; however he/she benefits from skin to skin contact achieving a sensory stimulation more similar to the womb and can sleep deeply favouring the neurological development and the mother–child bond.
A full term baby also may suffer an intrauterine growth retardation, which could affect his/her weight gain in the womb, and this baby, cannot regulate the temperature properly. This baby would benefit greatly from skin to skin contact and be considered a kangaroo baby until he/she begins to show signs of intolerance to prolonged or permanent skin to skin contact.
The baby will not tolerate a permanent and prolonged kangaroo position, but will enjoy and benefit from being on the mother’s chest creating a very important bond for the further development from birth (after being assessed medically and cleaned).
The mother will have a powerful stimulus for the production of breast milk, the best food for baby and she also will strengthen the bond, increasing the feelings of competence and her sensitivity to the needs and communication of the baby.
The Kangaroo Zak
Skin to skin contact is the best "welcome" that a parent can give a baby.
Using the Kangaroo Zak, the baby benefits from the natural body temperature, the sensory stimulation that the mother provides with her heartbeat, breath, scent, voice…that is the closest resemblance to the womb.
The state of calm of the baby while in skin to skin, reduces stress that causes complications, particularly the neurological, and becomes a factor of cerebral protection, essential for the development and maturation of the neurological system.
For the design of the Kangaroo Zak the delicate baby skin was taken into account, so it is made mostly of cotton, a natural fiber. It is hypoallergenic that combined with a small percentage of elastic fibers, provides boundaries to the baby, adjusting to his/her corporal shape and the corporal shapes of the mother, maximizing the area of contact between mother/child, without pressing or forming wrinkles/folds that can injure them or be uncomfortable.
The zipper was chosen as the closing mechanism as it is this that provides greater safety compared with the Velcro® or cords, and it allows quick and easy access to the baby. The zipper should never come into contact with the baby so they are moved to the side before placing the baby on the chest.
Other benefits include:
- Provides containment and safe boundaries
- Maximizes area of contact between parent and baby
- Longer holding time
- Bonding with the parents
- Safe, comfortable, and steady position while being held
