About Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)

1. What is Kangaroo Mother Care Method?
Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a scientific method developed to complement the care of the premature and/or low weigh new born. It was devised in Colombia, South America, in 1978 by a pediatrician (E. Rey+1992) and has actually emerged as the unique available tool to enhance Low Birth Weight infants’ health care in the world. KMC is a technology, centered in the mother as the main provider of heat and stimulation (skin-to-skin contact, i.e. “kangaroo” position), nutrition (maternal milk) and close monitoring after early discharge at home in KMC.
2. What is kangaroo position and skin-to-skin contact?

Skin-to-skin contact between the mother/father and the child, in a strict vertical position, between the breast of the mother and under the clothes. Mothers are employed as incubators and as the main source of nutrition and stimulation. The infant’s temperature stays within normal range, thanks to the heat of their mother's body. A significant number of studies have been conducted to assess the behavior of physiological variables while in Kangaroo Position. They have shown that the temperature, the oxygenation, the cardiac frequency and other physiological parameters are maintained within normal values while in kangaroo position. While in skin-to-skin contact the infant can be fed at any moment. Any other person can share the role of the mother as a kangaroo position provider. While sleeping, the position provider must lay in a semi-seating position. Kangaroo position is maintained until the infant does not tolerate it anymore, meaning that appropriate temperature regulation has been achieved. Kangaroo position should be initiated as soon as possible after birth, provided the infant is stable enough to tolerate it. 4. What are the benefits of Kangaroo Care?

Temporary contact: Bonding, sensory stimulation, stress dimishing and stimulation for the breastfeeding … Long term: All the mentioned above, regulation of the temperature

5. How often should Moms Kangaroo?
